The already fragile relationship between Telstra and the Federal Government has taken another turn for the worse.

The company's unexpectedly dumped plans for a $4-billion high-speed broadband network.

Telstra says the deal fell through because it couldn't agree with the competition regulator on price.

Australian DSL costs have fallen 15 per cent since 2004, and are set to drop a further 11 per cent by the end 2006. The figures, which saw Australians averaging $66 on DSL in December 2004, project expenditure to fall as low as $50 by the end of 2006.
